Refrigeration Operator for Recreation Facilities Course

Level 1

The Refrigeration Operator for Recreation Facilities course (formerly known as Arena /Curling Rink Operator Course) helps prepare students to successfully pass the Province of Manitoba Power Engineer Refrigeration Class exam. 

Course Overview

The course follows the SOPEEC (The Standardization of Power Engineer Examinations Committee) Syllabus, which includes chapters on welding, air conditioning and electricity have been added. The course syllabus provides more detail on the new course material.

The course manual we will be using is the PanGlobal Power Engineering- Refrigeration Plant Operator textbooks. Not only will these textbooks be used during both Level I and Level II but they will be a good resource for both facilities and facility operators. Textbooks are available for purchase directly through PanGlobal.

Students need to pass both the Levels I & II course assessments to received the 900 credit hours towards the required 1,800 hours to attain the Power Engineer's Lisence. 

The course tests and final exams are designed to prepare students to write the provincial exam. Administration of the Province of Manitoba Power Engineer Refrigeration Class exam is the responsibility of the Office of the Fire Commissioner, Inspection and Technical Services Branch. Additional information regarding the provincial examination process is available online. All inquiries regarding the provincial exam should be forwarded to Inspection and Technical Services Manitoba.

Course Materials

In addition to the PanGlobal textbooks, the following items will be referenced throughout the course:

  • Manitoba Power Engineers Act – provided on the first day of the course – also available online
  • Manitoba Steam and Pressure Plants Act – provided on the first day of the course – also available online
  • Manitoba Workplace Health and Safety Act – provided on the first day of the course – also available online

Textbooks:

The new course will require a copy of PanGlobal textbooks – Refrigeration Plant Operator (Edition Three) PURCHASE or RENT and an Academic Supplement as well as a course manual. Regional and Recreation Services will ensure that each person attending the course has access to a set of textbooks they can use while taking the course. These books must be returned to the instructor at the end of the week. The cost to purchase all the books are dependent on what the current price set by Pan Global. If you wish to purchase textbooks to review prior to the beginning of the course you can do so online by visiting the Pan Global website.

Organizations are encouraged to purchase a set of books for their facility as they will be a good resource to have on hand and will be able to be used by other staff preparing to write the provincial exam.

Course manuals will be provided to each participant and are yours to keep.
